C.E. "Chuck" Free Jr., 80, of Homosassa, Florida, died Jan. 1, 2015, after a brief struggle with lung cancer. Chuck was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by family and friends.
Born May 26, 1934, in Hull, Georgia, he was the son of the late Charley Eldridge and Minnie Lawson Free. Chuck graduated from Colbert High School in 1951 and served in the U.S. Air Force from 1953 to 1957.
After leaving the military, he entered government service as an air traffic controller until retirement in 1987. Chuck and Erma moved to Homosassa, Florida, to enjoy their retirement. Chuck enjoyed hunting, time with his children and grandchildren, and providing lawn service as part of the "Friday Crew" at First Presbyterian Church of Crystal River.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Erma Perrey Free. Other survivors are sons Alan (Melissa) Free of Norman, Oklahoma, Steven (Laura) Free of St. Peters, Missouri; daughter Diane (Tom) McCorkle of St. Charles, Missouri; sister Estelle Lloyd of Clayton, Georgia; as well as four grandsons and three granddaughters.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Buell Yarbrough, February 2011; and his brother, William Odell Free, May 2011.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to either the First Presbyterian Church of Crystal River (www.fpccrflorida.com) or Hospice of Citrus County (www.hospiceofcitrus.org). Cremation will be by McGan Cremation Service (www.mcgancremation.com). Final interment is planned to be at Jefferson Barracks in St. Louis, Missouri.
