Gerald A. Delcourt May 9, 1926 - May 12, 2014
Gerald A. Delcourt passed away peacefully early on the morning of May 12 surrounded by 3 generations of his loving family. Jerry was born on May 9, 1926 to Merilda and Albert Delcourt and was raised in Westbrook, Maine, along with his 6 brothers and sisters. Jerry helped support his family through the tough economic times of the Great Depression and was not able to finish his schooling. However, he valued education so much that he finished his GED diploma many years later, after he had already become successful professionally. He also supported the educational goals of his beautiful bride of 55 years, as well as his children and grandchildren.
Jerry served in the United States Army in Korea from 1950 to 1953, where he managed military railroad transportation operations. An avid athlete, he also was a player-coach of the military volleyball team, and played semi-professional baseball in Kentucky after the Korean War ended. His first 2 children were born in Kentucky before he moved back to Maine.
Over the course of his long, storied life, Jerry worked in a number of occupations from truck driver to fireman to city inspector, but the majority of his professional career was spent in the concrete industry where he managed operations and sales for the Blue Rock, Dragon, and Auburn Concrete companies. However, perhaps his favorite stint was as town selectman in Mercer where he served along with very good friends Charlie Tibbetts and Bob Burr, and got to know absolutely everyone in town!
Jerry met his wife, Sandy, in Westbrook at the coffee shop where she had just stopped in after work as he was on his way to work. It was love at first sight, and they married and began their family of 4 just a few months later! Both Jerry and Sandy loved their family around them, so weekends and holidays were often home to children and spouses as well as their 12 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren from both Kentucky and Maine. Gram and Pep's house was always a boisterous, vibrant place filled with love and laughter, and Jerry spent many Sunday afternoons playing softball in the back yard with his family. Jerry and Sandy enjoyed other afternoons going to countless little league, middle school and high school games to watch his children and grandchildren play, and fundraising for youth sports.
Jerry is survived by his loving wife, Sandy; 5 children: Jeriece; Scott and his wife Robin; Sherrie; Keith; Daniel and his wife Lynne; 12 grandchildren: Amy and her mother Teresa; Nicole and her husband Scott; Brianne; Katie, Meaghan and their mother Sherry; Zachary, his wife Cassidy, his sister Shelby and their mother Therese; Leslie, Amber and their mother Lisa; Brandy; Taylor; and Andrew; 4 great grandchildren: Sadie, Molly, Chloe and Samantha; and his special brother Paul and sister Marie, as well as many close nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his oldest son Rick; two sons Kevin and Christopher, who were lost in infancy; his brothers Roger and Bertrand; and sisters Laurette and Anita.
A memorial service to celebrate Jerry's life will be held later this summer at the Lisbon athletic fields where Jerry watched many ball games. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to his favorite charity, St. Jude's Children's Hospital, or to your local youth athletic team.
