Ruth Emmeline (Henriques) Johnson
July 26,1922 - January 16, 2024
Ruth Emmeline (Henriques) Johnson, 101, entered her eternal home with the Lord on January 16, 2024, in Hernando, FL. She was born July 26,1922 in Brooklyn, NY to parents Jacob Henriques and Sarah (Sadie) Dryer Henriques. She was a graduate of Mary Washington College prior to her military service and later in life received her master’s degree in education at Georgia State University. She lived her life as a patriotic Veteran having served in the Women's Army Corps (WAC) from 1943-1946. She was a member and officer of the American Legion Post 232 in Snellville, GA. She also supported and volunteered at the Gwinnett Veterans Memorial Museum in Gwinnett County, GA. She met her late husband, Sam L. Johnson, Jr., a WWII Coast Guard Veteran, at New York University whom she married on May 29, 1948. After retirement they travelled throughout the world and were members of the Atlanta Chapter of the Friendship Force. Ruth was also an avid knitter and cross stitcher. She and her husband enjoyed 51 years of marriage before he passed away on February 28, 1999. Ruth was a long time resident of the Atlanta, GA area, where she taught school in the DeKalb County school district. She relocated to Hernando, FL in 2012 to be near her daughter and son-in-law. She spent her final 5 years at Grand Living of Citrus County where she was well cared for and loved by both family and staff. Ruth is survived by her son, Stuart L. Johnson and his wife, Sarah and her daughter, Mariruth Bodenheim and her husband, Mark. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Angela Sanchez, Jason Fromant and Lauren Johnson and their spouses, as well as two great-grandchildren, Charles Sanchez, and Hailey Sanchez. She will be sorely missed by all, but we rejoice that she has been reunited with her husband, parents, siblings, and many friends who have been waiting patiently for her in heaven. A memorial service for Ruth, presided over by Rev. Shawn Kline, will be held at Hernando United Methodist Church on February 16th at 10:00 AM. A private family interment ceremony at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, FL will be held at a later date. Our family thanks the health care heroes at Citrus Memorial Hospital, ClearSky Rehabilitation Hospital in Lecanto, FL, and the VITAS Inpatient Hospice Unit of Citrus County for their loving care and services. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Ruth’s memory to VITAS Healthcare Hospice of Citrus County by calling 352-527-2020.
